Joseph Marice Johnson (Wells), a devoted father, beloved friend, and steadfast soul, passed away on November 15, 2024, at the age of 69. Born on December 10, 1954, in Brickeys, Arkansas, Joseph’s life was a journey of love, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to family.
In the early 1970s, Joseph left his hometown and moved to Chicago, where he built a life rooted in hard work and compassion. It was there he met Joann Campbell, and their love brought the greatest joy of his life—the birth of their son, Valejo Johnson.
Joseph’s devotion to his son knew no bounds. As a single father, he poured his heart into raising Valejo, instilling in him values of strength, resilience, and love. When Valejo was just 9 years old, his cousin Jason Gipson joined their household. Without hesitation, Joseph took Jason under his wing and raised him as his own, fostering a brotherhood between Valejo and Jason that would last a lifetime. Joseph’s selflessness and care created a home filled with love and unity, and his sacrifices shaped the two young boys into strong, compassionate men.
Known for his wise words, protective nature, and a heart as big as his smile, Joseph had a way of making everyone feel valued and loved. He was a lover of blues, jazz, and rap music, enjoyed a hearty laugh, and found peace in quiet moments of reflection.
Joseph Marice Johnson is survived by his sons, Valejo Johnson and Jason Gipson, who will forever cherish his memory and honor his legacy.
Though he is no longer with us, Joseph’s unwavering love and sacrifices will live on in the hearts of those he cared for. He was a man who gave everything for his family, who created a legacy of love, and whose memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Joseph. Your love, kindness, sacrifices, and legacy will never be forgotten.
